Penguin Sewing Make and Take Kit for Maker Space Ages 10+

Felt sewing patterns are some of the best for creating make and take kits. The project can be simplified or made more difficult based on the ages of your participants. For something like a felt penguin, the child will most likely be 10-13 years old. The following is how I would arrange a sewing kit.

You have two options to work with - hand sewing or machine. I prefer machine.
Then you need to decide on how many steps the project should be. Less than 10 steps is good.

Here is that pattern - I would print this at 200% on cardstock so it is bigger and easier to work with. The original file can be found here.

Now that you have a copy you need to cut the shapes out in felt. I use a white crayon to trace. 2 Large black bodies, 1 White middle body, 2 feet, 1 beak, 1 heart, 1 bow tie, 2 cheeks, 2 eyes. Place all the pieces in a zip bag. Print 4 to a page the right side of the pattern giving instructions.
I would add to the instructions to glue the small pieces on with hot glue. This will require supervision.
Here are the steps:
1. Remove all pieces of felt and lay them out.
2. On the white body, follow the photo instructions to hot glue on they eyes, cheeks, nose, bow tie and heart.
3. Using the sewing machine and white or black thread sew the white body to the center of the black body. You may use sewing pins to hold in place.
4. Glue on the feet according to the photo directions.
5. Now you will take the other black felt and pin it to the back of your penguin. You will sew around the entire body, connecting the two. Make sure to stop sewing when you reach the feet.
6. Stuff the penguin. Use the back end of a pen or pencil to push the stuffing into the penguin.
7. Finish sewing with the machine until the penguin is completely secure.
